Fiber cement is a versatile and durable building material, which is composed of cement, different types of fibers, fillers and water, among others. In this process, the fibers provide reinforcement and additional strength. Fiber cement lends itself perfectly to the production of facade panels, which can be glued very well. A condition for this is that the correct pre-treatment and adhesive system are used. Bostik contributes to this with a complete and certified adhesive system for fiber cement panels including primer, adhesive, cleaner and foam tape, which have been successfully tested by an independent testing institute in combination with well-known panel brands. But also with comprehensive advice and clear processing instructions.
"As a founder in facade panel bonding and with 35 years of experience in global projects, we offer a unique range for bonding fiber cement panels, for example," says Bram Palmen, Product Manager at Bostik. "Our products are successfully tested and European certified. For example, our adhesive for fiber cement panels (Bostik Paneltack HM), among others, has a KOMO and ETA certificate. We can also submit Peutz certificates in the field of fire safety and are represented in the technical committee of the industry association VLK, which deals with standards and regulations surrounding wall panel adhesives."
The Bostik Paneltack adhesive system is suitable for bonding fiber cement panels from various manufacturers, such as Swisspearl, SVK and Equitone (with the exception of Linea, Lunara and Tectiva panels). "In close cooperation with these manufacturers, we continuously research and test the adhesion of our adhesive system to their panels," Palmen said. "We then also have the combinations tested by an independent testing institute. We also create specific processing instructions per manufacturer and per panel type. To ensure reliable adhesion for a long time, the processing instructions and general guidelines for wall panel adhesion must be followed precisely."
An important condition is that the panels are glued in a ventilated facade system, on a support structure of vertical strips of wood or aluminum. If this does not happen, a hot bubble of air can develop behind the panels as a result of summer sunlight, Palmen knows. "Temperature fluctuations can also cause condensation, resulting in wood rot in the battens. Although our adhesive system is excellent for absorbing shear loads (due to the panels' own weight), wind loads, and shrinkage and expansion of the fiber cement panels, the system is not designed to stop deformation of the panels due to external conditions. The ventilation openings at the top and bottom of the wall panels must therefore remain unobstructed at all times to ensure reliable bonding for a long period of time."
A major advantage of Bostik Paneltack's adhesive systems is the limited number of processing steps, he says. "Intermediate steps such as cleaning and dry rubbing are not an issue. This allows processors to save considerable time without sacrificing quality and reliability. Bostik is happy to advise on the right products and provide support for their correct processing."
